What I can do...

The best way to learn is by doing, and I am continually focused on practicing and improving my skills to be the best I can be.

Since joining the full-time workforce eight years ago, I've consolidated my skills and acquired further expertise through professional mentoring and short vocational courses, but often the best lessons have been simply taking an idea – my own or someone else’s – and running with it.

Ultimately good communication is about achieving some form of buy-in from the people you’re communicating to; whether they are fellow employees, other areas of your business, or your customer.

Multimedia

While I was studying at university the dot.com boom was at its peak and I realised that the web presented real opportunities; not only as a way to sell things online, but also as a new medium to communicate with people in a dynamic and engaging way (perhaps only with WEB 2.0 is this now being fully realised). I developed my skills in this area at university and consolidated them by working in an interactive design studio.

Whatever the genre or context, the words on the page (or screen) need to have an energy.

In addition to learning the basics of writing and editing at university, I have devoted a considerable amount of time to developing my writing skills through self-study and practise. Along the way I have also had the fortune to be mentored by several people in my professional and social networks who I consider to be gifted writers in their chosen fields of expertise.

Likewise, one of the most rewarding aspects of professional communications is working with someone – no matter what level they are in the organisation – and empowering them to express themselves more clearly in written words.

As my career moved away from purely web-based roles, I  gained increasing exposure to print and presentation media. I now use these communications channels together with online mediums to communicate with target audiences.
