The Net Promoter Score (NPS) measure invented by Bain management consultant Fred Reichheld has gained rapid acceptance from major corporations throughout the world.  Within the Australian context Mark Ritson is considered  a thought leader on this measure. His research here, although two years old, provides a succinct introduction to NPS and how it is changing the way Australian companies think about measuring their customers’ response to the service they provide.

Books

HTML for the World Wide Web Visual Quickstart Guide – by Elizabeth Castro
This book has been revised and expanded several times since I bought my first copy in 1998. For anyone who wants to learn how to create web-pages this book is perfect – simple, engaging, and a fantastic reference tool.

The Non-Designer's Design Book: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice – by Robyn Williams
Whether you need to make existing documents look better, or design something from scratch, this book will definitely help you on your way.  It isn’t about using applications or adding special effects, it just starts with the basics of what makes graphic design look good and then gives you some practical techniques you’ll soon be using without even realising it.

The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More – by Chris Anderson
A really great read by the editor-in-chief of Wired Magazine. It sets out a vision of what selling on the internet is really about and how it can be profitable. In terms of communications the idea of the ‘long tail’ is also instructive when thinking about niche audiences and narrow-casting.

Getting to Yes: Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving in – by Roger Fisher and William Ury
I discovered this book while studying negotiations as part of my Masters programme. It’s only short but really makes you think about how negotiations work, why we negotiate, and also challenges a lot of pre-conceived ideas about when you can and can’t negotiate. Turns out you can negotiate a lot more than you would perhaps think.
